Create new products and improve existing ones

Product development overview

Product development is a process that teams can follow to create new products and improve existing ones. While there are countless variations on the product development process, it often follows four steps: discover an opportunity in the market, generate ideas, build the product, and commercialize it. Having a step-by-step process is critical—without structure, teams can waste time and fall behind their competition.

Based on factors such as available market share, customer requirements, investment needed, competitor analysis etc., a business case can now be developed. This is often treated as the first step of the formal product development process.

A product can be defined as a collection of benefits that can be either tangible such as a physical item or intangible such as a service or experience. The new product development process involves two simultaneous activity paths. One of these focuses on extensive market research and analysis while the other deals with generating ideas, design of the product and detail engineering. New product development is the first stage in the product life cycle management process, the strategic process that is used to manage products and market share. An effective product development process helps a company to:

Product development processes help teams avoid costly errors. While not everything can adhere to a process—some products are discovered by accident or through lucky mistakes—processes ensure teams waste as little time as possible.

1.Identify a customer need

Identifying a customer need is the most critical and most overlooked step in the development process. Teams often skip it—they hear customers complain and want to immediately find a solution—but this is like driving miles down the wrong road before checking the map. It’s much better to slow down, listen to customers, and try to understand the real issue. Sometimes, a customer complaint isn’t what it seems.

Product development is the creation of a new or different product that offers innovative new benefits to the end user. This includes both the creation of an entirely new product and modifications to an existing product. These changes or new introductions may be targeting a newly defined customer requirement or a niche category in the market.

2.Idea brainstorm

Once the team has identified a real need, they can begin trying to solve the problem. There are plenty of ways to approach idea generation, but it’s best to alternate between coming up with as many ideas as possible—known as ideating—and then refining the list to just those that are feasible.

Teams must keep an open mind because it’s often impossible to know which is going to work early on. Team members can sometimes resist ideas simply because they haven’t been tried before, and can accidentally rule out viable options.

3. Product development

Before teams build a product, they must build a business case to justify its cost. For example, are there enough potential buyers? Will they be interested? Can they pay enough to make the process of development viable?
During this stage, the product team can collect customer feedback, iterate, and improve its features to prepare it for release.

4.Prototype

Does the concept of idea reached here make business sense and does it have business value? Positive answers to these questions lead to the decision to purse the creation of the prototype of the product and negative answers may end the process right here to be started again from the beginning

5.Launch

Finally, the product arrives at the commercial launch stage. The marketing mix comes together to introduce the product to the market. This stage marks the beginning of the product life cycle.

 6. Evaluation

The launch does not in any way signal the end of the marketing role for the product. To the contrary, after launch the marketer finally has real market data about how the product performs in the wild, outside the test environment. These market data initiate a new cycle of idea generation about improvements and adjustments that can be made to all elements of the marketing mix.
